After Robbie got his second set of ear tubes, he had to have a follow-up hearing exam. He failed. At his age, it's hard to tell if he genuinely couldn't hear, or if he just wouldn't cooperate with the tests and questions. The only way to know for sure was to do a sedated hearing exam. Basically they knock him out and measure his brain waves to audible tones. Fortunately he passed 100%. Turns out, he's just..um.. stubborn. Playing with a firetruck from the hospital.

Ear Tubes: The Sequel

Robbie's first set of ear tubes fell out in December. We had hoped that by that point, he would be able to get by without them. Unfortunately, not only did he end up with a couple of ear infections over the next few months, but he also failed his hearing exam a few months after that. At the time of his hearing test, he did have fluid in his ears (but no infection) and the thought was that it was keeping him from being able to hear well. It was also suggested that we could take his adenoid out at the same time, which might help. So we went for our 2nd set of tubes.

Robbie's 3rd b-day party was held the weekend before his birthday. It was Pirate themed as Robbie was in a HUGE pirate phase.

When Robbie got his G-tube placed in March 2009, we hoped he wouldn't need it long. His GI doctor thought it could be less than a year because he had good eating skills, but his pediatrician warned that some kids don't outgrow it until closer to kindergarten.

We spent a lot (A LOT) of time in therapy and talking to every expert we could find, both professional and otherwise. Some of the best advice we got was from other parents of "tubies." It was mid 2010 when Robbie started showing an interest in eating, and improved slowly from there. But he still steadfastly refused to drink in early February 2011. Occasionally he'd get really hot and drink and ounce or two of water, but never more than that, and we would go months without even that much.

We tried numerous weans only to hit the point that he simply had to be hydrated and have to tube him again. The process was indescribably stressful & frustrating. Finally, though, in late February, we decided to try again. One more time. This time we decided to mostly ignore the numbers and focus on Robbie's body language instead. He didn't drink for a few days, but then he'd chug several ounces. Then he wouldn't drink again. Fits and starts we had, but never did he show signs of dehydration. He was still crying tears, had energy, mouth seemed moist, wetting diapers. He pushed us to the point of giving up several times. He'd go 4 days drinking no more than 6 ounces a day until we simply couldn't go on, but then he'd down another 7 or 8 at bedtime that 4th day and we'd start the cycle over again.

It took months before we stopped counting every milliliter and walking on tiptoes when he would drink, being scared to startle him out of it. But eventually we got there.

On May 26th, we went to a regularly scheduled GI appointment. When the nurse practitioner, Sarah, came in, she asked how things were going. I told her with no small amount of pride that he hadn't been tubed at all since February. She asked if I wanted her to take the tube out. I had thought it was possible we could discuss it at the appointment, but I wasn't sure if it had been long enough. I was pretty sure he was ready, but I wasn't sure they would agree, so I was surprised how quickly she go to that point. I asked if she thought we really could and she assured me yes. Right away, I started to play Devil's advocate. But he still doesn't drink 20 oz a day. And some days are really low. And we still have to encourage him, and supplement him with watery foods like applesauce. She just smiled and shook her head. "Trish," she said, "look at him. He looks GREAT. Whatever you're doing is working ." She pointed out that he'd gained more weight in the 3 months we'd been working on this than he had in nearly a year before that and said it was time. And with that, I started to cry.

I suddenly realized I didn't have the camera with me, so I grabbed my cell and took one last tubed photo.

Pulling the tube was nothing. Simply deflated the balloon and pulled it out, then bandaged his stoma (the hole in his stomach). At that point she surprised me even further by discharging him from GI altogether. He still needs his reflux meds, but his pediatrician can handle that. He didn't need a specialist anymore. Whoa.

And with that, he became a tubeless kid.

And then? We did what any other American toddler would do to celebrate. We went to McDonald's. But that's what he is. A typical American toddler.

April 30 was our 2nd annual March for Babies walk. Team Remarkable Robbie raised $1925 to help save babies. The day was lovely. Once again, seeing everyone's shirts, seeing everyone united for such a worthy cause was very moving. The bigger kids with their shirts that announced they, too, had been a preemie was very inspiring. It was a special day. Thank you so much to everyone who donated and supported us.

This was our 2nd trip to Monkey Joe's. It's basically a giant place filled with bounce house type toys. Robbie wasn't a fan the 1st time, but we were hoping he'd warm up.

I don't know if I can say again how much the March of Dimes has meant to my family. There are only so many ways to say "They helped save our son's life." A few days after Robbie was born we were down visiting him in the NICU. I was still admitted to the hospital myself, but this was the first day I was able to walk (albeit slowly) down to see him. This particular day stands out very clearly in my mind. The NICU almost seemed to have a special glow that day. As we left the NICU to go back to my room, I remarked to David that I felt almost like I could see angel's wings on the backs of the nurses in the unit that day. They were literally doing God's work.

That is how I feel about the March of Dimes still. They are doing God's work. The research that they help fund has lead to breakthrough after breakthrough which has improved survival rates of babies born as early as Robbie, along with countless other accomplishments dating back to their original mission to cure polio.

That day in the NICU, I told David that if we hit the lottery, we were designating a large portion of money to the angels doing God's work. Unfortunately those winning lotto numbers are still eluding us. The next best thing I can think to do is to raise money. I'm not a public figure. We're not celebrities. We're just a regular family hoping to make a difference. The best way we know how to do that is to march. We are going to march for babies.

One of the challenges that has come with Robbie talking more and more is wondering what in the world he's talking ABOUT.

The experts say that you shouldn't pretend to understand a toddler, but press them to communicate well. But let's be honest, sometimes you just don't know and you're both frustrated.

This night, he kept saying "Assipah! Assipah!" For the life of me, I could not figure out what he meant. Asphalt? Ash pah? As pa? I just didn't know. Finally I patted him on the head, "yes dear, assipah."

He finally gave up on me and brought a visual aid- APPLESAUCE!

Today is November 17. November 17 is National Prematurity Awereness Day. The March of Dimes has asked bloggers to blog for our preemies in honor of this day.

Last year I spoke about what it really means to be a preemie; that a preemie isn't just a small baby, but an unfinished one. All of his systems are underdeveloped leaving him at risk of infection, disease, and overstimulation. But it doesn't just stop when those systems finish developing.

The damage done to a baby born early is not easily overcome. For a baby like Robbie- not "just" a preemie, but a micropreemie- it can often take years before he will be able to catch up from the damage done to him. For Robbie, it means that almost every accomplishment he makes comes with an asterisk. Even when it goes unspoken, the implication is there.

When someone says how big he is, they mean in comparison to the pound and a half he was born at. He still hovers at the bottom edge of the growth charts. He is significantly smaller than children even more than a year younger than him in his daycare class.

When they comment on how well he's eating, they mean compared to 6 months or a year ago when 100% of his nutrition had to be pumped directly into his stomach, not to other children his age. He still has an extra hole in his stomach by which we keep him hydrated enough to live.

When we talk about how active he is, we marvel that he's doing so well now considering a year ago he wasn't even rolling over. Two and a half years later, we still struggle to overcome the damage his body sustained in being born 14 weeks early. He still gets daily medicine to treat his hypersensitive stomach.

We still fight the damage done to his lungs by being born before they were done developing, from the pressure put on them from the ventilator that kept him alive until he could breathe on his own. He takes a breathing treatment of steroids every night all winter because even a slight sniffle goes straight to his lungs causing him to gasp and wheeze. When he gets that sniffle, we double that dose and add another drug to dilate the passages in his lungs so that he can breathe.

He's come a very, very long way. We've gone from seventeen sessions of therapy a month to just 9. We only see one specialist every 4 months instead of the sometimes weekly treks we made during our darkest times. He no longer receives calories or nutrition through his G-tube, just hydration. He's going through a language explosion, beginning to communicate with us with more than just whines or grunts or the occasional sign. But he isn't done yet.

As his mother, I'm not sure I'll ever overcome the anxiety that prematurity brought to our lives. Even if he woke up tomorrow completely caught up, I would still over analyze small things, wondering if it's another symptom of his early birth. When he squints one eye to point at something, his therapists write notes about checking his vision- the effects of the oxygen on his eyes could show up at any time. When he resists a textured ball, it's called a sensory problem attributed to his nervous system experiences too much too soon. As his mother, I know in my head that these are just cute quirks that are part of Robbie, but the fact that they come into question is just another gift that prematurity has given us. I watch closely, balancing a fine line of vigilance and security.

Of course, being a mother to a preemie brings a lot of unique pleasures. Tonight, Robbie sat on my lap letting me feed him bites of steak & carrots while I fought tears of joy. I'm not sure I'll ever stop marveling at the pleasure of seeing him thrive. It's something that parents of children born knowing how to eat take for granted.

Robbie's birth also brought a lot of amazing people into my life. From parents of babies in the NICU with Robbie to other parents I've met online, I'm blessed to be surrounded by parents who also marvel in the small things (and I don't just mean the size of our babies!)

The experience of parenting a child who was born early or spent a long time in the NICU is unique enough that early this year I founded a message board for parents of these babies born too soon. These other parents have been a huge resource for us. While we all lean on and appreciate each other, the one thing we all agree on is that it's a club we wish we never needed to join. We are a sorority whose initiation is worse than any hazing the Greek system could imagine. We all dream of a day when we can close our membership.

Currently one in 8 babies born in the U.S. is born too soon. Each day nearly 1500 families give birth to a baby who will come with extra scrutiny and worry; a baby who comes with asterisks with even a question as simple as "how old is he?" It's a club that's way too large.

So on this day, I ask that you think of our babies. Right now at a hospital near you, a mother is wringing her hands, staring at a monitor instead of her baby's eyes. She's praying they can all make it through the night. She's wondering about today, tomorrow and next year. She's feeling guilty, wondering if she could have done something different. She's looking into the faces of the strangers caring for her not-yet-supposed-to-be-newborn, hoping they know how important that tiny bundle hooked up to all the wires really is.

These worries are real. Many babies don't make it. Many have issues that won't be outgrown. Many will, but only with a lot of hard work and worry.

We are very blessed that Robbie's lingering issues have been manageable. He is expected to outgrow them, though no one can say when. God and medicine, and the March of Dimes, has given us the opportunity to see our miracle's smile and hear his laughter every day. Not everyone is so lucky.
